Flavorful Fireworks

Multisensory Display

On New Year’s Eve in London this year, fireworks did just that with the first-ever multisensory fireworks display.  The show was not just a feast for the eyes and ears, but also the mouth and nose, thanks to the innovative London food design studio Bompas & Parr.

Alongside the classic red fireworks display, the line up for London’s NYE celebration included strawberry scented mist, banana flavored confetti, and giant orange flavored bubbles.  Sam Bompas, co-founder of Bompas & Parr, described the evening as “a total sensory assault” in an article on SLATE.com.

B&P

Known for their “immersive flavor-based experiences,” Sam Bompas & Harry Parr focused their early work on the relationship between food and architecture.  Their most notable projects include jelly-based architectural recreations, including St. Paul’s Cathedral, a chocolate climbing wall, and a Taste Experience for the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin.

After a year of studying with pyrotechnicians, fruit farmers, and flavor scientists, the B&P designers were able to unveil their most ambitious project yet: the multisensory firework display.  Out of hundreds of flavors, they chose the most easily recognizable fruit flavors like strawberry, banana, and orange.

From there, they worked with the flavor scientists to find the most appealing and distinguishable sensory aspects of the fruits.  The end result was the “largest universal flavor experience” that out-shined all other firework performances in the world.

Participants in the London NYE show loved the first-of-its-kind experience.  One fan even went as far to say that from now on, every time he eats strawberries, he will recall this event.
